A Guide to your first appointment…

Preparing for your first osteopathy appointment can feel a little daunting, but with the right steps, you can ensure a smooth and productive experience. Here’s a guide to help you get ready:

Wear Comfortable Clothing

Osteopathic treatments often involve movement assessments and hands-on techniques. Opt for loose-fitting, flexible clothing with jewellery removed, which allows easy access to the area of concern. For example:

  • If you have an injury in the lower body, wear shorts or leggings.

  • If you have an injury in the upper body, please wear a sports bra (females)

  • Avoid stiff clothing like jeans or buttoned shirts that may restrict movement

Gather Medical Information

Although osteopaths can access imaging results online, please bring any relevant medical records, such as:

  • X-rays, MRI scans, or test results (from the last five years if available).

  • A medication list, including prescriptions, over-the-counter drugs, and supplements.

This information helps your osteopath better understand your condition and tailor the treatment plan.

Avoid Heavy Meals

Refrain from eating at least an hour before your session to avoid discomfort during physical assessments or treatment.

Arrive Early and Relax

Plan to arrive a little early to complete the new intake form and settle into the environment. Being calm and relaxed can enhance your overall experience. A bathroom visit will also contribute toward a more relaxed session.

Be Open and Honest

During the consultation, your osteopath will ask about your medical history, lifestyle habits (e.g., diet, exercise, stress), and symptoms. Share as much detail as possible to help them identify the root cause of your issues.

Bring Questions

Prepare a list of questions to ask during your appointment. These might include:

  • What is causing my pain?

  • What does the treatment involve?

  • How many sessions might I need?
This helps you feel informed and engaged in your care plan.

Stay Hydrated

Drink water pre and post treatment to support your recovery and reduce any post-treatment soreness.

By following these steps, you’ll be well-prepared for your osteopathy appointment, setting the stage for effective treatment and recovery!
